Mentone hosting interclub – Saturday 12 November

Mentone is hosting Shield Competition this Saturday, 12 November!

Please note there will not be a 3000m steeple – but a flat 3000m race instead.

The following duties have been allocated to help run interclub.  All members are required to help.

U20 team – responsible for packing up equipment at end of competition

Pole Vaulters – responsible for setting up and packing away pole vault

Open team – Arrive at 12.30pm to help set up and during competition assist with hurdles (we need as many helpers to ensure that hurdle heights are adjusted quickly during competition)

Committee members – Arrive by 12.30pm – canteen duties, officials afternoon tea and invitational entries.

Thank you for your support and we’ll see you all on Saturday at the club!

Shield Comp – Saturday 29 October Albert Park

This Saturday we compete at Albert Park’s new lakeside stadium – the new home of Athletics Victoria.  All athletes are invited to come along at the start of the program to join in a ‘first’ lap.

Mentone is helping at the high jump this week – please make yourself available to help out inbetween events.

Last week at Casey’s new facility, there was a great turnout from our athletes.  Well done to our relay teams too!  We had a number of dual athletes competing with the club.  Please support these younger athletes as they transition from Little Aths into senior aths.

If you need uniforms – please see Heather this week. See you at Lakeside!

Shield Competition – summer season starts 15 October 2011

The Shield Competition commences on Saturday 15 October at Frankston!  We look forward to seeing everyone back at the track!  If you need new uniforms or have any questions – please email Heather on secretary@mentoneathleticclub.com.au

Mentone will be officiating on the high jump - we need four helpers at all times, so please come and help out for an hour inbetween events.  Each week the club has to provide four helpers to assist with the smooth running of events.

This season we will be hosting two interclub meets at Mentone - 12 November and 8 December!  All members are asked to make themselves available to help with these meets to ensure that we continue to get to host events in the future.

Awards – Life Membership to Doug Eales

The Mentone Athletic Club wishes to congratulate Doug Eales on his Life Membership award.

The current membership voted on Tuesday 29 June to award Doug with Life Membership.  Doug was nominated by the committee for his 80th birthday celebrations.  The overwhelming response to the nomination from our members, was that he is very much a part of the proud history of our club and a man very worthy of this honour.

Doug was a member and coach during the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s.  He served as club Secretary in 1951-52 and 1955-56 and as President in 1960-61.

Doug is part of our club’s proud history and has an interesting story about his involvement in the 1956 Olympic Torch Relay.  You can hear Doug’s story online at http://www.abc.net.au/torch/main53a.htm

The club will hold a presentation of life membership to Doug in the coming months.

We encourage all members to listen to Doug’s Olympic Torch Relay story.

Attention All Members – Shield Competition Age Group Rules

Round One of Shield Competition begins on Saturday 9 October at Knox Athletic Club, Scoresby.

Mentone Athletic Club will be entering U16, U20 and Open teams.  The club will nominate all athletes into the default age group for these teams by 1st October.  For example, if your 17 years old, you will be nominated to compete as U20.  This is to maximise our team points.

For athletes wishing to compete in their own age group (you will not be eligible to score team points), you will need to compete as invitational.

Please refer to the memo from Athletics Victoria for full details.
